What Is a Jhabla? The Newborn Essential Every Indian Home Needs
4 min read · Updated 1 July 2026
If you grew up in an Indian home, you have seen a jhabla. It is the soft, tie-up top that generations of newborns have worn first — and there is real wisdom in its simple design.
The jhabla, explained
A jhabla is a lightweight, front- or side-tie baby top with no tight neckline to pull over a newborn’s delicate head. The ties let you adjust the fit and dress a wriggly baby without a struggle.
Because there is nothing tight and no rough tags, it is one of the gentlest first garments a newborn can wear.
Why it still works so well
Newborns dislike clothes pulled over the face, and their skin is easily irritated. The jhabla solves both: easy on, easy off, and soft all over. In a soft bamboo-cotton jhabla, it is breathable enough for Indian summers too.
How to choose a good jhabla
Look for tagless construction, breathable bamboo-cotton, secure but gentle ties, and OEKO-TEX certification for skin safety. Prints are lovely, but softness against the skin comes first.
Frequently asked
What age is a jhabla for?+
Jhablas are ideal from newborn through the first several months, when tie-up tops are easiest and most comfortable. Larger sizes work well as everyday innerwear too.
Is a jhabla better than a onesie for a newborn?+
Both work. Jhablas are easiest for the earliest weeks because nothing goes over the head; onesies are handy once your baby is a little bigger.
