Newborn Clothing Checklist: What (and How Much) You Actually Need

5 min read · Updated 1 July 2026

Babies grow fast and outfits get outgrown quickly, so the goal is not more clothes — it is the right basics in the right quantity. Here is a practical checklist that avoids waste.

The core basics (0–3 months)

6–8 jhablas or bodysuits — your everyday workhorses. Buy soft, tagless newborn basics.

4–6 rompers or onesies — for outings and layering.

4–6 cloth langots or nappies — breathable and reusable. See our cloth langots.

2–3 muslin swaddles — for sleep, feeding cover, and tummy time.

4–6 bibs and a pack of reusable muslin wipes.

How many is enough?

Plan for at least two changes a day plus laundry cycles. If you wash every 2 days, 6–8 of each daily item is comfortable without over-buying.

What you can skip

Newborn shoes, stiff denim, and anything with rough seams or big appliqués. In the early months, soft and simple always wins.
