How to Wash Bamboo Baby Clothes (So They Stay Soft)
4 min read · Updated 1 July 2026
Bamboo-cotton is easy to care for and actually gets softer with every wash — if you avoid a few common mistakes. Here is the simple routine.
The simple 3-step routine
1. Wash cold, gentle cycle. Cold water (around 30°C) protects the fibres and the prints. Turn printed pieces inside out.
2. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Softener coats the fibres and actually makes bamboo less soft over time. Bamboo is already soft — it does not need it.
3. Line dry or tumble low. High heat is the enemy of softness. Air drying keeps the fabric supple and colours bright.
Before the first wear
Wash new baby clothes once before first use to remove any manufacturing residue and maximise softness. A mild, fragrance-free detergent is best for sensitive skin.
Why bamboo gets softer with time
Unlike many fabrics that pill or stiffen, bamboo-cotton relaxes and softens with each gentle wash, which is why it stays comfortable for years and passes down beautifully.
