Baby Milestones 0–12 Months: A Simple Month-by-Month Guide
6 min read · Updated 1 July 2026
Milestones are guides, not deadlines. Babies develop at their own pace, and a wide range is perfectly normal. Here is a gentle month-by-month overview of the first year.
0–3 months
Focusing on faces, responding to sounds, the first social smiles, and beginning to hold up the head during tummy time. Lots of sleep and feeding — the foundation for everything.
4–6 months
Rolling over, reaching for objects, babbling, and laughing. Many babies start sitting with support toward the end of this window.
7–9 months
Sitting without support, transferring objects between hands, and possibly crawling. Stranger awareness often appears — a normal sign of development.
10–12 months
Pulling to stand, cruising along furniture, waving, and perhaps first words or first steps. As babies get mobile, soft, flexible everyday clothing keeps them comfortable to explore.
Frequently asked
When should I worry about milestones?+
Ranges are wide and most differences are normal. If you have concerns about your baby’s development, your paediatrician is the best person to reassure or guide you.
Do all babies hit milestones at the same time?+
No. Every baby is unique, and reaching a milestone a little earlier or later than a chart is usually completely normal.
